Other Bands I like....
ASH
ASH used to be my altime favourite band, in those days way back when... *sigh*. I'm not so hot on them any more, but felt duty bound to stick them in here, and they take alphabetic precedence... I actually know a lot about this band (mainly disposable knowledge).... But I won't bore you with it, just basically, the guys are called Tim (the pensive one), Mark (the loud one), and Rick (Rick who?), the latest edition to the band is a girl: Charlotte (the one with the uterus). The guys started the band when they were in their mid-teens, in Dunkirk Ireland. Their first album 'Trailer' is just a mess, which is why I think it's so good. The lyrics are pretty poor, and the music... well one thing I can say in it's favour is that I would not have thought it possible for one band to rip off so many other bands in one fell swoop... Still, it's fun and pretty tuneful.

But enough negative points, the next album '1977' more than made up for Trailer. If you're into pop I definetely recommend this album, it's just so much... fun, and easy to listen to. Great for sing-alongs... good teen fun... yeah... well that's it. Oh no, wait, I forgot, the latest release: Nu-Clear sounds... .... ... well... .... it's shite.

Their new website is now OPEN! It's fairl interesting. You may have to install Flash, but it only takes a couple of minutes. (ASH WEBSITE)
BUSH
Bush are just amazing. That's all I have to say. No wait, I lied, I have LOADS more to say. The band consists of Gavin Rossdale, David Parsons, Robin Goodridge and Nigel Pulsford. The guys have been around for about 5 years now. Their music is admittedly similar to some of Nirvana's stuff, but you just can't knock it. I hate to blaspheme (or risk getting beaten up by my friends) but personally I find the Bush tracks much smoother and better produced than anything I've heard from Nirvana and the lyrics are way more profound. God, the lyrics! I am so totally awe inspired by some of Bush's lyrics, and to balance it out, the music is equally deep and varied.

The latest album 'The Science of Things' took me a while to get used to, in some ways it's really similar to the previous album 'Razorblade Suitcase' but on this album, the guys have experimented with really different sounds. After a week or so, I decided, the changes were an improvement. I was a bit disappointed that the first single 'Chemicals Between Us' didn't do as well in the charts as it deserved. Oh, and I hate to ruin my cynical bitch image by being too full of praise, but the video was also outstanding.
MUSE
Muse are a fairly new discovery, made up of three 20 year old guys; Matthew Bellamy (in the picture), Dominic Howard, and Chris Wolsenholme. The guys actually got together when they were thirteen, but weren't signed up until 1998. They got John Leckie (he produces for Radiohead and Stone Roses) to help them with their album. The album was released around the end of '99, but there's a good chance you haven't heard of them yet. You may have seen them at Glastonbury '99, and very very very very very very rarely, their video 'Muscle Museum' is played on MTV (another outstanding video). They've been touring with Skunk Anansie, and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, so look out for them!

"...their tunes are all spectacular...any Radiohead comparisons are only complimentary especially as Muse are younger, more dramatic..." NME March '99
"...they will be huge..." The Guardian (Glastonbury Review) June '99
"...massive, angst-ridden rock anthems...Muse look set to jump up to the big league..." Kerrang! June '99
"...they articulate emotions that will draw you in and they have even better tunes..." Melody Maker June '99
"...stars of tomorrow..." Music Week (Glastonbury Review) June '99
"...they are going to be huge...you're going to love them.."NME July '99
NIRVANA
Well seeing as all my favorite bands are accused of being 'Nirvana wannabies' I guess it kinda figures that I like Nirvana's music. Despite, or rather because of their rough unpolished style, Nirvana come across (to me) as one of the few bands who really felt and got involved in the music they were making. 'Nevermind' is really easy to listen to, while 'In Utero' took me ages to get my head around. There's not much I can say about Nirvana that you probably don't already know, but I'm gonna go ahead just incase. Nirvana were: Kurt Cobain, Krist (Chris) Novoselic and Dave Grohl (Now with the Foo Fighters). In 1991, Nirvana released their album 'Nevermind' it caused a huge revolution and stormed pop and rock charts alike. The first track 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is still a huge anthem for teens around the world.

On April 8, 1994 Kurt Cobain was found dead of a self-inflicted shotgun wound. This saw the end of Nirvana, although a compilation of live performances was put out after Kurt died. Nirvana continue to influence the rock scene, and their fan base only grows as more kids hit their teens and 'Smells like Teen Spirit' becomes THEIR anthem.
OUR LADY PEACE
Our Lady Peace are a Canadian band, made up of Raine Maida (it's just the best name!), Mike Turner, Duncan Coutts and Jeremy Taggart. They're pretty famous in Canada, but less so over here. Still, their music rocks. They released their first album 'Naveed' in 1994 with their singles 'Birdman' and 'Starseed' going to the top of Canadian charts. Since then they have released a further two albums; 'Clumsy' and 'Happiness is not a fish you can catch'. 'Happiness....' was only released at the end of '99.

After trying for ages to work out the lyrics to the songs in 'Happiness...', I checked out what some critic guy interpreted them as...."Happiness then, according to Maida's sour grapes, is not only unattainable but boring, so why bother?"..... hmm the guy could be right... Anyway, the songs are really catchy and tuneful.. nothing too hardcore if you're not used to rock music. I'm not gonna go on though, coz the guys have a really nicely laid out website: (HERE) where you can find out more for yourself!
PLACEBO
Placebo.... Okay, goes without saying, Placebo are one of my favourite bands ('swhy they're on this page....) but I never have and never will try to defend Brian Molko's nasal voice. It is so Goddamn annoying!!!!!!!! But, as you can see, I have managed to overcome this... infact I'm kinda getting fond of his irritating little voice. The songs just wouldn't be the same without it. And I think it is really important to overcome these little quirks about the band which can lead to prejudgement. If you give the music a chance, it might just blow you away.

Placebo are: Brian Molko (from america), Stefan Olsdal (a Swede) and Steve Hewitt (from England). The bands androgynous image have created a really weird fanbase (okay, but that does not include me!) as well as some really biased haters. The eponymous debut album 'Placebo' is filled with catchy almost pop-like songs with very non-poplike lyrics which I am too young to understand. The second album 'Without You I Am Nothing' is more of the same; twisted love songs with such tuneful melodies that they made it onto Top Of The Pops with the single 'Pure Morning' despite it's sexual and drug related lyrics.
